2009 Santa Fe Trailer Brake Controller Wiring Recommendation

Question:

My 2009 Santa Fe comes equipped with a trailer prep package as a standard feature heavy duty radiator fans, transmission oil coolerand is supposed to be capable of towing up to 3500# if the trailer has its own brakes. My dealer did install a Hyundai 3500# Class II ? hitch BUT the electrical connection for trailer hook-up was terminated in a 4 Pin connector that is usually used on lower capacity hitches 2,000#. Isnt there a larger multi-pin connector that typically goes with the 3500# hitch, so that electric trailer brakes can be powered? Is my Santa-Fe pre-wired to have such a connector? What parts would I need to purchase for such an installation? Would they be plug and play or would there be cutting an splicing required? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Your 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe is not pre-wired for a 7-Way or 6-Way connector so you will need to do a bit more wiring to install a brake controller on your vehicle. Depending on the connector on your trailer you can use either the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, or the Brake Controller 6 and 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC6, to wire your vehicle for an electric brake controller and 12 volt power, to provide accessory power to the trailer. All of the hardware needed is included with these kits. You will not have to splice into the vehicles taillights to install this kit but you will have to run wires forward and connect them to the proper circuits.

You can use any brake controller you like with these kits. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885. The P2 is currently our most popular proportional controller. Wiring the brake controller will require splicing into the cold side of the brake pedal switch, running the power wire to the vehicle positive battery terminal, and running the blue wire to the trailer connector.

I will provide links to the operating instructions for the P2 as well as some other helpful information including our Brake Controller Install Guide and an installation video. The video shows a controller being installed on a different vehicle than yours, but the procedure would be very similar and should go a long way to help you through the installation.
