Recommended Power Center Converter For Charging A Valence U27-12XP Lithium Battery

Question:

Hello, I am hoping to build a small camper van electrical system around a Lithium battery with a built-in battery management system. Can you help me choose a product to charge my battery off of 120V shore power? I am considering the Progressive Dynamics RV Power Control Center with AC/DC Panel and Converter/Smart Charger - 35 Amp - Item # PD4135K and trying to determine if this is compatible with my battery or if a different product would be a better fit. I have a Valence U27-12XP Lithium Iron Magnesium Phosphate battery, 138Ah, specifying a Recommended Charge CCCV 72A and 14.6V. I hope to charge it from shore power 120V either 15A or 30A - doesn’t matter. I am interested in the Power Control Centers that you sell because they additionally include the DC and AC setup. Can you advise me on whether the 35A Power Control Center will be good for my battery or what the best option would be? Best, Sarah

Yes, the Progressive Dynamics RV Power Control Center # PD4135K would be compatible with your Valence U27-12XP. You'll just want to flip the converter charging profile switch from "LA" to "LI" to properly charge your lithium battery. As for the amperage, you'll want to be at least 10% of the total amp hour rating of the battery up to the max rating, which for you is 72 amps.

The # PD4135K will fall well within these guidelines so it will work for your needs, but I personally would go with the # PD4045KA to gain an extra 2 branch circuits to power your appliances. An extra 10 amps will help charge your battery a bit faster as well.

Each converter has very specific guidelines for the wire gauge used during installation so you'll want to ensure you follow the chart listed in the instructions to prevent an electrical fire.
