Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller on 2016 Ford Explorer with 4-Way

Question:

2016 Ford explorer base model 4wd. Looking to pull a pop up camper. No tow package at this time. I do have a 4 wire flat connector that I wired to the rear lights. What do I need to buy to give me brake control to the camper? Thanks.

In order to use a brake controller your 2016 Ford Explorer will need to have a 7-way trailer wiring connector as the 4-way does not have ability to carry that circuit. So for that the kit you need is the part # ETBC7 which comes with a 7-way adapter and everything else needed to wire in a brake controller.

For a brake controller I really like the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty part # RED24FR and install harness # RED69FR. This puts only a small knob on your dash to control the controller instead of a larger box that can feel like it's in the way. This is also a proportional brake controller which means it senses how hard you apply the trailer brakes and applies a proportional amount of trailer braking pressure.
