5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for a 2014 Ram 3500 with Factory Prep Package

Question:

Just purchased a 2014 Ram 3500 DRW with factory hitch prep. Like so many others, just learned there is no hitch currently that will fit directly into the Ram pucks. If I go with the Reese adapter, will the Reese M5 hitch RP30928 attach directly to the adapter without the need for rails? If not, what is the best hitch to use that will work with the adapter, or would you recommend a different hitch? Finally, since the adapter raises the hitch height a couple inches, have you heard of any problems with the hitches installed on the taller 4x4 trucks being too high for the pin? First time towing with a 5th wheel, so I want to make sure I dont run into any problems when I drive half way across the Country to pick up my new trailer. Thanks in advance for any recommendations you can give me.

You can use Reese 5th wheel trailer hitch # RP30928 with the adapter for the Ram OEM prep package, # RP30154. The adapter will except 5th wheel trailer hitches that fit in industry standard above the bed rails.

It is possible that if the truck is raised beyond stock there could be issues with being able to tow the trailer level. Both the hitch head and the trailer pin box can be adjusted up and down though and in most cases that is enough adjustability to tow the trailer level.

In the event that the trailer is still too low you could either get an over under conversion kit to move the trailer leaf springs to the top of the axle, if they are not there already. There are 2 kits, # K71-384-00 fits 2-3/8 inch round axles, double-eye springs only, and # K71-385-00 fits 3 inch round axles, double-eye springs only.

If the springs are already on top of the axle then you could get taller hangers. Keep in mind that raising the trailer height also raises its center of gravity and makes it more susceptible to sway.
