I suppose there could have been a power surge during the emergency braking event that knocked out the controller. What you will need to do is use a circuit tester, # PTW2993, to test the black wire leading to the controller. It should show power. If it does not, then the brake controller power fuse is blown (if it just plugs into the vehicle) or the circuit breaker keeps tripping. Replacing the fuse or circuit breaker should reestablish the power to the controller.
If there is power on the black wire and the control does not light up then that indicates a problem inside the controller, and it will need to be replaced. The same goes if it is sending power on the blue wire all the time. Not likely though since the brakes are not working. To test the blue wire sever it a few inches back from the controller and use the circuit tester to test the end coming from the controller. It should only have power when you fully apply the manual override.
You will also want to inspect the vehicle and trailer side connectors for any possible damage or loose connections. The braking even could have jarred something loose.
You will also want to inspect the brake magnets and their wiring. Check for loose connections and brakes in the magnet power wiring. Also make sure that the grounds are attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. Visually inspect the magnets and if you can see the windings coming through, they will need to be replaced.
To further test the magnets, you can follow the FAQ article I have linked. If the magnets shorter out and back fed to the controller it could have damaged the controller.as well.
