Muffler of 2010 BMW 1 Series Rattles Against Recently Installed Hitch

Question:

I followed the instructions step by step. This isnt my first hitch installation. When I drove it for the first time after the install I noticed that the exhaust sounded louder. After further inspection it seems that once the car warms up the 4mm gap between the muffler mount and the hitch closes. This causes the muffler to rest against the hitch. Ive Googled to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing but I havent found a solution. Any ideas on what needs to be adjusted so the muffler mount and hitch arent rubbing? Thanks, Kevin

I have not had any specific feedback on that vehicle, but having a muffler rattle against a hitch is a fairly common occurrence that is easily repairable.

Because an exhaust system is meant to move on its hangers, it does not sit in a fixed position, and this position can vary a bit from vehicle to vehicle. If you look at the FAQ article I have linked you to, you can see some different strategies like slightly bending the exhaust hangers to provide more clearance between the hitch and muffler.

Just installed the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" on my 2015 Toyota Rav4. I am noticing a rattle with the muffler. During the installation video, you removed an extra hook. you never indicated that you put it back on install. I tried both ways (installed and not) and still experience a constant rattle. Any recommendations? Thank you

This is actually somewhat common and we have a dedicated article that explains how resolve it (linked below). Bending the exhaust hanger just a tad should create enough space to stop the rattling but some other methods are listed as well.
