Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2013 Toyota Highlander Considering Ground Clearance
Question:
I just bought my new Highlander 2013 and realized, based of one of your experts advise to someones else question, that only by installing a hitch I will be able to transport bikes. Unfortunately, carrying the 3 bikes on the roof is not an option for me. The bikes are 1 adult and 2 childrens bikes. My drive way is very steep. Will the hitch be lower than the exhaustion pipe? Will it scratch on the floor when getting out of the garage? Thanks

The design of this specific hitch is intended to be mounted above the exhaust on your Toyota Highlander, and of the trailer hitches that are considered a fit for your vehicle this one would be your best option for maximum ground clearance.
We have a video of this exact hitch being installed on a 2013 Toyota Highlander, and in that video, it is explained that from the top of the hitch to the ground is 14-1/2 inches. I went out to the warehouse and measured this hitch, and the base of the receiver tube, and the side brackets are the lowest points on the hitch. I have included a diagram showing the clearance for you. The hitch should not sit lower than your exhaust, and If you are not having issues with the exhaust hitting, then with the hitch installed you should not have any issues.
If you take a measurement on your vehicle as you are leaving the garage, and there is at least 11 inches of clearance then you should be fine, for your hitch clearance.
Please note that Curt requires the use of a stabilizing strap for all non-trailering loads such as the # 18050.
For a hitch mounted bike rack to carry your 3 bikes you will also have to be aware of the distance that the bike rack extends and the ground clearance of the bike rack when it is installed into the hitch on your Highlander.
I believe that your best option for carrying 3 bikes is the Thule Helium Aero 3 # TH9043PRO. I have also taken several measurements of this bike rack and have included them for your reference. The shank of this bike rack does provide additional clearance with the unique mounting style. Another great benefit of this bike rack is that it is extremely light weight, since it is constructed of aluminum it is both sturdy and easy to handle.
You may also be interested in using an adapter bar that will mount to the vertical handle bar and seat post and will provide a horizontal crossbar that will allow an alternative, womens, or kids bike to be carried on a hanging bike rack style. I recommend the Thule bike adapter bar # TH982XT.
I have included links to the parts referenced above, and several videos, and a helpful article for your reference.
