Troubleshooting Trailer Light Blinkers Not Functioning With Cars Turn Signals

Question:

My trailer lights are working, however they dont respond to the car turning signals, flash light and break. Is there any steps to troubleshoot this issue? I checked the connector and it had some dust inside which i cleaned with a small metal brush. But the problem persisted. Thank you in advance.

First you will need to determine if the problem is on your vehicle or your trailer. You can test this by using the Circuit Tester # PTW2993. This will allow you to test your trailer connector for voltage in the correct places when the taillight functions are applied. You will need someone to help you that can sit in the cab run through all of the functions to make sure they're wired correctly.

If the voltage is working on the vehicle than the problem will be on the trailer. I honestly suspect that the problem you're experiencing is ground related. I would run the grounds of each light assembly back to the main ground wire of the trailer connector you installed. Another option would be to check if the trailer wiring harness is wired to match the connector at the back of your vehicle.

If you have any further questions please feel free to reach back out to me anytime and I would be more than happy to further assist you in your towing endeavors.
