Can a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Be Flat Towed

Question:

The 2022 and 2023 Crosstrek models have a new 6 speed transmission. Does this affect flat towing? Can I tow in ACC or do I need to tow in RUN mode? Some bloggers post that it needs to be in RUN mode and this is stated as the recommended mode in the Subaru manual. One blog even states that you can only flat tow the newer Crosstrek for 30 miles at a time. I towed a 2014 Crosstrek for 8 years and it was fine to operate in ACC. There is so much mis-information on this topic, I was hoping you might have real world experience to share The new synchromesh design might require transmission fluid to circulate. If the car has to be towed in RUN mode, I would likely need a trickle charger to keep the Crosstrek battery fully charged for towing long distances. Thank you

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek can be flat-towed with all four wheels down. That said, models with a CVT transmission are limited to a traveling speed less than 20 mph and distance less than 31 miles according to the manual. Therefore, you can really only flat-tow the MT models. The ignition switch should be in the "ON" position. If you would like further clarification, see page 9-16 of your owner's manual. I have attached a list of parts below as well if needed.

Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit part # RM-52927-5
Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar part # RM-676
Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit part # RM-152-98146-7
Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System part # HM39524 (Battery Charge Line Included)
