Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a Class B RV

Question:

I have a 2012 20 ft class B Ford E-350 RV/van with double cargo doors at the rear. It has a 2inch receiver rated at 1,000 lbs of tongue weight, but has only 12inch of ground clearance. I carry 2 bikes - one is a womans bike. We travel a lot and want to take our bikes from AZ to Alaska and back. Although the RV is only 20 ft,, weight may be a concern because it is 6.5 ft from the rear axle to the rear bumper. I have looked at several options and have gotten quite confused. Can you make a recommendation? Thanks PS I love your website! Easy to use and extremely informative.

I will be happy to help. The first piece of information that will help you choose a bike rack is that not all bike racks can be used on RVs, even if it is a Class B RV. On RVs and trailers, there is excess bouncing and movement at the trailer hitch. Most hitch mount bike racks cannot handle the excess bouncing and would likely fail during your trip causing expensive damages.

We do have several bike racks that are rated for use on a RV. I have attached a link to these bike racks for you to check out.

For your situation, I recommend looking at the Swagman 3 Bike Rack, # S64152-2. This bike rack gives you the ability to carry an additional bike if the situation arises. I have attached a video review of this bike rack for you to check out.
