Parts Needed to Add a 7-Way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller to a 1995 Ford F-150

Question:

I would imagine that there is no factory hookup for this older, but well maintained vehicle. I will be trailering a new APEX RV trailer with dual axles weighing approx. 5,000 lbs. It has electric brakes on all four wheels. What electrical accessories do I need to complete the install ready to connect the new RV and drive? What are part numbers and costs, apart from this proportional controller. note: there is currently a trailer connection at the rear where I observed the previous owner used scott electrical connectors to tap into the braking light wiring. It is a mulitple prong/plug fitting positioned in a straight row. There is no socket/female type outlet or connection currently installed.

I will be happy to help you get what you need to add a brake controller and proper trailer connector on your 1995 Ford F-150. First, it sounds like you have a 4-Way flat connector. This will provide the basic light functions but you will need a 7-Way trailer connector to provide the proper connection and to have the brakes work.

To add a 7-Way you will need # ETBC7. On it the white wire grounds to the frame, the black wire is 12 volt power, blue is output to the trailer brakes, and purple connects to the reverse light circuit if needed.

It does not sound like the 4-Way is factory installed on your truck and the connections you mentioned make me think that a new one may need to be added. I recommend # 118316 which will just plug in line with the tail light wiring.

With a new 4-Way installed you can then install the 7-Way included with the ETBC7 and wire up the brake controller. I have included some links to the right that will help explain the ETBC7 installation.

The Agility brake controller you referenced would not be my top choice or even in the top 5. For a good proportional controller that will not break the bank I recommend the Tekonsha Primus # TK90160. This is a reliable controller that is going to work well for you. The rest of the ETBC7 kit contains the wiring and accessories you will need.
