Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2013 Nissan Xterra and 2006 Jayco Jay Feather Trailer
Question:
I have a 2013 Nissan Xterra I am pulling a 2006 Jayco Jay Feather 23B it has a dry weight of 3,440 lbs and a cargo weight of 1,310 lbs I am not sure of the tongue weight. I am using Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller. I would like to add weight distribution with sway control. I dont know which type of weight distribution would be best a trunnion bars or round bar and what can I do if I dont know the tongue weight I dont have access to a weight station.

Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. So if your trailer when loaded and ready to tow weighs 4,750 pounds based on the information you have provided then the tongue weight would be 475 to 713 pounds. You would then add the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle to the trailer tongue weight to get the total tongue weight; the figure needed to choose a weight distribution system. I have included a link to an FAQ article that will help with determining tongue weight.
Trunnion bar systems are easier to hook up, provide better ground clearance, and are considered more heavy duty than round bar systems so I recommend going with a trunnion system. Dual-cam sway control is what I would recommend because it stops sway before it starts.
Reese makes weight distribution systems that have a tongue weight capacity range so you will not have to know the exact figure every time so long as you are within the range. If you determine the total tongue weight to be within the 475 to 713 range then I recommend a system rated for 400 to 800 pounds, # RP66083.
You will just need to add a properly sized ball to this system. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch ball or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball. I have linked instructions and a video showing a typical installation of a Reese Strait-Line system for you. If your trailer has a jack or propane tanks or something else where the lift brackets will need to go then you would need to get chain hangers, # RP58305 that bolt to the sides of the frame.
I have also included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control for you.
