Troubleshooting Turn Signals and Brake Lights Not Working With Curt Wiring Harness on 2009 Aveo5

Question:

Several years ago I bought a Curt trailer wiring kit 56081 for my 2009 Chevy Aveo5. I thought I messed up the wiring a few months later as the turning and break lights stopped working. I bought another kit of the same model from you a few years ago and finally installed it today. But I’m having the same issue. Running lights are fine but no turn or break lights on the utility trailer. I tried our boat trailer- same issue. I tried our Toyota Highlander up to both trailers and they work fine. I hooked up a trailer led tester and it shows all the lights work. So I know it’s hooked up right. So I’m wondering if the Curt wiring doesn’t have enough power left for the turn/stop lights. Is there another wiring kit that would work better?

With the installation of a new Curt wiring harness I doubt there are any issues with the converter, and it should have more than enough power unless you have an unusual number of lights on your trailer.

I would check out the ground connection, which is likely the issue. I'm guessing you used the same ground connection when you installed the new wiring harness. Make sure it is secure on a clean, bare-metal surface. It might be best to go ahead and relocate the ground just to be sure.

If you do decide to try a 3rd wiring harness the # HM11141964 would be the best option. It is a confirmed fit for your Aveo5.
