Will the Spare Tire on a 2008 Toyota RAV4 Interfere with Towing a Utility Trailer
Question:
I already have a ball and 1 1/4 inch ball mount that I want to use. Im looking at the Curt code c12108 Class II frame receive hitch. Will I have a problem because of the spare tire on the Rav4? I dont want to have to get an extension because I know that will reduce my load. Well be towing a utility trailer for things like lumber.

The spare tire should not be a factor if you are towing a trailer. It is a concern for things like bike racks though. With Curt trailer hitch # C12108 installed we have determined that from the center of the hitch pin hole straight back to the distance required to clear the spare tire is approximately 7 inches.
With a ball mount installed the coupler on the trailer will probably be slightly rearward of the spare and of course lower. The only issue is that on Class II trailer hitches you are supposed to use the ball mount recommended by the hitch manufacturer or it can void the hitch warranty. The reason for this is because that hitch was tested and given its rated based on the use of one specific ball mount, in this case # 36051.
As long as the ball you have has a 3/4 inch diameter shank you can use it with the # 36051 ball mount. But if you do end up needing a ball you can use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch. For trailer wiring use # 118412. I have linked a video showing a typical installation of the hitch and one for the wiring as well.
