Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 2021 Sunset Trail 185RK Travel Trailer
Question:
I trust Etrailer more than just any google search - thats why I have bought things from you in the past... Anyway, I have an F250 SuperDuty 7.3L engine, with the ultimate trailer tow package. Do I need a weight distribution hitch when towing a 3800 pound dry weight on my 2021 Sunset Trail 185RK? Tongue weight is 400 pounds. I get different answers on the web.

Yes. We do recommend using a weight distribution hitch on your 2021 CrossRoads Sunset Trail 185RK obtain the most control and peace of mind when traveling. In addition to control, it dramatically increases overall safety of your setup.
I went ahead and looked up the specs on your trailer. While it does have a dry weight of 3800 pounds and a dry tongue weight of 400 pounds, this changes when the trailer is loaded at full payload capacity. The payload capacity of the trailer is a total of 4800 pounds. Since the loaded tongue weight is 10-15% of that calculation, the loaded tongue weight is between 480-720 pounds. This is important when determining the firmness you need for your weight distribution hitch.
With that being said, I recommend using a weight distribution hitch with this setup. I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA94-00-0800. Since the tongue weight range of this hitch is between 400 lbs - 800 lbs, this is the system that provides you with the perfect firmness you need. As far as compatibility, this hitch mounts 24" - 27" back from center of coupler and fits trailer frames up to 6" high.
Since the hitch ball is sold separately, you need a ball that has a 1-1/4" shank like the 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 63840 (if that's the size of your coupler). I also recommend using a thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 for installing the ball.
