You can use a battery charger on the Hopkins Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery, part # HM20008, as long as the charger is designed for a 12 volt system.
I recommend the NOCO Genius Mini # 329-GENIUS5. This charger will not overcharge or undercharge as some common trickle battery chargers are inclined to do. It automatically switches to a pulse maintenance phase when the battery has reached full charge. This charger has multiple uses, and can be used for all household 12V batteries, like those used on cars, campers, mowers, trucks and boats. I have linked you to a video showing how this charger is used.
The life of these batteries is dependent on several factors. These include the frequency of use, the climate, and whether the battery is properly maintained and regularly charged. If properly maintained and regularly charged, you could expect many years of service from a battery. I've personally had the same breakwaway battery on my trailer for over 5 years.
