Wiring for Towing Motorcycle Trailers with a 2013 Toyota Venza
Question:
I have several 5 wire trailers, and normally pull them with motorcycles, but now wish to also pull them with my 2013 Toyota Venza. I have just ordered the Venza harness #118482 but the person taking the order could not answer how to use on a 5 wire system. Running Lights Left Right Brake Ground If this is the wrong part number, can you help me with the correct part number. My trailers do not use a 4 Flat plug, so is there an adapter of some sort or a different harness I need to order? Thank you.

Motorcycles and trailers made for motorcycles have separate brake lights and turn signals. Trailer wiring harnesses for vehicles combine the brake and turn signals onto the same circuit. That is why there is a discrepancy.
You will essentially have to make an adapter starting with wiring harness # 118482. On the output side cut off the 4-Way connector. You will need to hardwire the wires to another converter, # 118158. The brown wire will bypass the second converter. Then on the output side of the second converter, plus the brown wire, you will wire it into the proper 5-Way vehicle side connector for your trailers.
If it is a 5-Way flat you could use # HM47900 as long as you wired it in to match what the trailers take. Or for a 5-Way round use # PK11502.
The other option is to hardwire directly into the vehicle tail light wiring but I do not recommend this because that method is not circuit protected and a short on the trailer could fry something on the vehicle.
