The Telos XL Load Assist for Malone Kayak Carriers part # MPG351XL would only require one set to load two kayaks since you would simply load one side using them and then just bring them with you to the other side to load your other kayak. They are not permanently attached to the kayak or carrier.

The Malone load assist part #MPG351XL that you referenced can only be used with the DownLoader part #MPG114MD. They can't be used with the Thule rack you have now so if you wanted to use it you'd need to replace the carriers as well.

I do not know if the Replacement Cover Strip with Pattern for Thule AeroBlade Edge Cross Bars - 59" Long #TH69JH will fit 2009 VW Golf factory crossbars, but I can tell you they are 3/4" wide so fit that size channel.
