How To Determine Correct Braking Assembly And Axle Capacity Of Older Trailer With No Tags

Question:

I have a hacked up trailer no clue the axle weight limits. It is a 5 bolt but has 3 inch axles, seemed to be cut and welded back together. ugh. I need to replace the brakes, the brakes are 2 inches wide and have a 5 bolt pattern attaching them to the axle with the bolts spaced out at 7 inches. Can you help with a part number?

We do carry a variety of replacement brakes for different applications, like the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA, which is designed for 5,200-7,000-lb axles with a 5 bolt mounting flange pattern.

These brakes are also 12" in diameter, 2" wide and will fit 12.5" to 16.5" wide wheels.

Since you mentioned your trailers axle is 3" in diameter, that would indicate that your trailer should have an axle capacity of 5,200bs-7,200lbs.

What you can do to confirm is pull your hubs off, and check the bearings for a number stamped into the metal, this would give you a good indicator of what capacity your axle is supposed to be.

I have attached an FAQ regarding the most popular bearings, which may lead you to the correct axle capacity.
