Is the Measurement of a Hitch Receiver Size the Internal or External Dimension of the Tube?

Question:

Good Morning: I have a class 3 trailer hitch, pulling 6,000-7,500lbs. Sizes say 2inch, 3 inch, 2 1/2 inch etc., Is that external figure or internal. I would like to know what size I need to buy.

The size of the hitch (1-1/4", 2", 2-1/2", and 3") refers to the internal dimensions of the hitch receiver tube. Since Class III hitches are only on 2" receivers, the internal dimensions of your hitch measure 2" x 2". However, it is important to make sure that you do not exceed the weight capacity of the hitch or the weight capacity of your vehicle.

I went ahead and attached a helpful help article that walks you through the measurements of each hitch we carry.
