Yes, you can use a hitch extender like the Buyers Products Hitch Extender # 3371804017 on your truck to carry a cargo carrier. This particular extender reduces receiver capacity by 1/3rd of its maximum capacity and will extend the receiver 18".

So as an example if you are looking to carry a 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 with your truck. Say your truck and receiver are rated for a maximum tongue weight of 750lbs. The adapter would reduce that by 1/3rd to 500lbs. The weight of the adapter(28lbs) and carrier(61lbs) would then be subtracted from 500lbs to give you an allowable capacity of 411lbs on the carrier itself.

Be sure to check the adapter itself for a maximum weight rating and for its reduced capacity as some reduce receiver weight capacities are reduced by 50% rather than the 1/3rd.
