There are many great brake controllers available but my favorites are the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller # RED44FR and Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. You can choose the one that best fits your preference.
I find the P3 # 90195 is the easiest to use out of the box and for troubleshooting issues. It has a customizable LCD screen that give you all the information you could want and is easy to read. It's a proportional controller so once its set for that trailer it will automatically adjust braking sensitivity based on the inertia sensor in the controller.
The Redarc # RED44FR is great if you are concerned with the size of the controller on your dash. Since the small control knob is the only visible portion of the controller it doesn't take up a lot of space. This controller is also proportional but can be switched to timed if you prefer.
Both controllers will come with the necessary pigtail for wiring to the wires on your 2008 Chevrolet Silverado Z71. I have linked an installation video below as well as an article that will help with wiring the controller. You will need a M6 # 185916 and M8 # 185917 for the wiring in the engine compartment.
GM Red/Black Wire to Black Brake Controller Wire
GM White Wire to White Brake Controller Wire
GM Light Blue/White Wire to Red Brake Controller Wire
GM Dark Blue Wire to Blue Brake Control Wire
GM Orange Wire is not used
