What do You Recommend for Transporting 3 Kayaks on a 2007 Ford Focus and a 2004 Ford Expedition?

Question:

Hi, I have a 07 Focus wagon with factory raised rails and flattened crossbars. Do I have the space to carry 2 kayaks on top with J rack style carriers? Do I need new crossbars? How wide would the crossbars have to be to carry 3 kayaks across? I also have an 04 Expedition, again with factory rails and flat crossbars. Would that be able to carry 2-3 kayaks on top? Thanks

Without knowing for sure what length your factory crossbars are on your 2007 Ford Focus or your 2004 Ford Expedition, there is a way to determine how much space j-style cradles use on your crossbars. With the J-Style Rhino Rack Kayak Carrier # S512, the cradles use 14 inches of crossbar space when in the unfolded position. Therefore, in order to accommodate two kayaks, you need at least 28 inches of usable crossbar space for two sets of the cradles to be used at the same time. As far as the compatibility with your factory crossbars, I recommend making sure that your crossbars on both vehicles do not exceed 3-1/8" wide x 1-3/16" tall. If your crossbars fall under this measurement, the # S512 will fit your crossbars.

If you plan to transport more than 2 kayaks, the best space-saving option is the Rhino-Rack Nautic Stack Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - Post Style # RRS520. Since the Nautic Stack allows you to mount your kayaks in a vertical position, it is extremely efficient with crossbar space. If your vehicles do not have front or rear tie-down points, I recommend the anchor straps # RRRBAS-2 for each kayak. Also, for more than 2 kayaks, you need additional bow/stern tie downs, cam buckles, and anchor straps all included in the # RRRBAS-RTD55P-RTD45P. In order to make sure that the Nautic Stack can clamp around your crossbars, I recommend measuring your crossbars to make sure they do not exceed 3" wide x 1-1/2" tall.
