Recommended Tekonsha Brake Controller for Towing Heartland MPG Travel Trailer with 2011 VW Touareg
Question:
I have switched from a 2007 Highlander to a 2011 VW Touareg TDI and want to add a break controller, which is the best option of the four Tekonsha units? I am towing a Heartland MPG 183 with an empty weight of 2700lbs and fully loaded 3600lbs. thanks

The primary differences between the lowest and highest priced Tekonsha controllers is the features they offer.
The Voyager, part # 39510 works very well, but its pretty limited in the range it can be mounted under the dash. It is also not very user friendly in that there is not an digital LED display to provide any feedback if the controller malfunctions for any reason.
The Primus # TK90160 and the P2 # 90885 are pretty similar. Both controllers feature LED displays that provide feedback about the performance of the trailer braking system. The P2 offers the greatest flexibility in mounting options, while the Primus needs to be mounted between level and 70 degrees above level (see the diagram in the product description). The P2 is compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems. Both controllers offer 3 boost settings which provide greater initial braking action for heavier trailers.
The P3, part # 90195 offers the same mounting flexibility as the P2 and is also compatible with electric over hydraulic braking systems. The display is much more user-friendly than the Primus or P2, instead of showing an error code that would need to be looked up in the owners manual, the P3 will actually spell out what the problem is.
Given the small camper you are towing, I would recommend the Primus or the P2, either of which would work great for you.
The 2011 Touareg does have a connector under the dash for installing a brake controller, but the wiring harness is not available as an aftermarket item, you would need to see your VW dealer for the part or have them install it for you.
I have linked you to the manuals for all 4 controllers, as well as an FAQ article about brake controllers.
