Compatibility of Lippert LC380605 Sway Command Trailer Sway Control With 2020 Subaru Ascent

Question:

Tow Vehicle: Subaru Ascent Premium with factory hitch. Ive ordered a Redarc Tow Pro Elite and plan to install it on our Subaru Ascent for trailer brake requirements as well as emergency anti-sway correction. While researching the compatibility of standard anti-sway friction bars to help prevent travel trailer sway, I discovered this automatic sway sensing and correction system that, unlike almost? all aftermarket electronic brake controllers, is mounted directly to the trailer 4-10 ft aft of the hitch on its centerline. This seems brilliant as it allows the driver to focus attention on the roadway ahead as opposed to constantly watching the trailers behavior in the side view mirrors. Naturally, I want one but, according to the product description and one of the answers here, it might NOT be compatible with our SUV. Id like to know if this particular system can be used if I also have the Redarc Tow Pro Elite brake controller installed and in use on our 2020 Subaru Ascent. NOTE: Our TT not yet delivered has a single axle and empty weight of 3,700 lbs.

The only fit/compatibility exclusions for the Lippert # LC380605 Sway Command trailer mounted sway control system would be 2014 or newer GM trucks and SUVs equipped with an integrated trailer brake control module (ITBCM).

The system would work just fine on a 2020 Subaru Ascent that's been equipped with an aftermarket brake controller like the Redarc Tow Pro Elite, part # RED44FR. Can I make a suggestion, though? Unless you're planning on towing off-road through rough terrain, you won't need the user-controlled mode offered by the Tow-Pro Elite. I'd recommend the lower cost Tow-Pro Liberty, part # RED24FR. The Tow-Pro Liberty operates proportionally only, which is perfect for trailers used exclusively on-road.

How you'd install the controller will depend on how your Ascent is equipped. If the vehicle is equipped with the factory tow package which includes a 7-way trailer connector installed at the rear bumper, the install will be pretty simple. You'll plug the controller into the connector under the dash using the # 3062-P harness and the # 331-TPH-017 adapter harness. The factory connector is located under the dash, behind the hood release latch as shown in the provided photo.

If you don't have the factory tow package, you'd hardwire the controller. You'll begin by installing a functional 4 pole trailer connector using part # 118790. From there, you'd use our # ETBC7 brake controller install kit. The kit includes all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware needed to complete the installation, including an adapter that will convert the 4 pole provided by the # 118790 to a 7-way.

I'll link to several install and demonstration videos that you might find helpful.
