What Do I Need To Add A 7 Way Trailer Connector To A 2021 Ford Explorer Without A Tow Package?
Question:
Hi, I purchased the Tekonsha 118599 wiring harness from you guys a few months back for my 2021 Explorer (no towing package) and it has been working fine. I am looking at getting a camper for the coming spring and summer seasons though and will need to get a brake controller. I am looking at the Curt Echo since it looks like an easy one to use. But it needs a 7 way plug and I only have a 4 plug. How do I convert that to the 7 to get this working and what all do I need? Thanks

Already having the Tekonsha 4 Flat # 118599 on your 2021 Ford Explorer will actually make the process of upgrading to the 7 Way a lot easier. What you will need is the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L. This will piggyback off your existing 4 Flat and all you will need to do is run one wire up to the battery for power. The Curt Echo Brake Controller # C51180 will need no other wires run to get it working properly. The No-Drill Mounting Bracket # 18140 will also make attaching the 7 Way to your hitch a lot easier and give it a nice clean look.
As to the Curt Echo # C51180, it comes highly recommended. It is very easy to use and set up, and if you ever change vehicles, it can easily be taken with you. One potential add on I always recommend with this controller is the Manual Override Button # C83HR. This can be mounted basically anywhere with the included double sided tape and it allows you to not have to rely on your smartphone to use the manual override function. Definitely a nice thing to have.
