Recommended Weight Distribution System for 7,800 Pound Tritoon Boat Trailer

Question:

Good evening. I have a 2017 Cadillac Escalade ESV and a 2021 Tahoe 27 Cascade Platinum Elite tri-toon with a 2 extension. The boat trailer has surge brakes. Trailer and boat weigh 7,800 lbs with fuel, equipment and supplies. I am looking at the Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter for Weight Distribution Systems - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW - RP58393 and Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 10K GTW, 1K TW - RP66559. I also need a 2 5/16” ball. Will this combination work to distribute the weight and reduce the sway? Other suggestions? Thank you.

It sounds like you have things pretty well figured out. The Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter for Weight Distribution Systems # RP58393 is the perfect solution for adding weight distribution to a pole-tongue trailer like yours. It won't matter if you mount it on top or below the trailer tongue, it can handle your 7,800 lb trailer.

The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66559 is also compatible with this adapter. This weight distribution system is a great choice and will keep your vehicle level. It also has 4 points of sway control to keep your trailer in line. That being said, I do have a different suggestions. Sticking with the same style I recommend getting the # RP66560 instead.

Based on your 7,800 lbs you will have a tongue weight that is 780-1,170 lbs (10-15% of total trailer weight). The # RP66559 is only rated up to 1,000 lbs where the # RP66560 covers 600-1,200 lbs of tongue weight. This tongue weight range is more in line with what you have and should have you covered. Since you need a 2-5/16" ball and one is not included you can use the # 19286.

I recommend finding your tongue weight to be sure using a scale like the # e99044 or the bathroom scale method. When it comes to weight distribution you want your tongue weight to fall somewhere in the middle. If it isn't rated high enough it will be ineffective and if it is too high you will suffer a rigid ride and bouncy trailer.

I have attached some review videos along with a helpful article on how to determine your tongue weight for your reference.
