Replacement Trailer Coupler for 2004 Featherlite 2000LB GVWR Aluminum Trailer

Question:

I own a Oct 2004 Featherlite model #1683 all aluminum open trailer, Size: 4.6 X 8, Mfr Date: Oct 2004, GVWR: 2000 lbs, GAWR: 2000 lbs. I want to replace the Coupler unit due to a lot of top surface rust and including the locking lever especially. The existing horizontal mounting bolt holes c/c is 3.125inch and it mounts to a 3inch sq aluminum hvy duty tubing. The ball dia is 2. The mounting bolts dia is 7/16inch for 1/2inch dia holes in the coupler. Your part # F2230000301 Coupler differs with the c//c mtg bolt holes being 3inch NOT the 3.125inch on my existing coupler. What to do? Any suggestions? I see where new coupler installation instructions warn NOT to lot any mtg holes. I cannot see why it would be dangerous to slot on of the two thru holes by .125inch horizontally. I am ready to order a suitable coupler. I look forward to your reply soon. Thanks

I do see that the Fulton Fas-Lok Coupler, 2" Ball, 3" Channel # F223000301 has a bolt hole center of 3-1/16". The bolt holes are also slightly larger at 17/32". These slight tolerances will allow you to be able to still bolt the new coupler in place of your old coupler without having to elongate or slot the holes on the Fulton Coupler.

You mentioned that you have 7/16" bolts and the Fulton recommends using 1/2" diameter hardware. If you only have 7/16" holes on your trailer frame the holes will need to be enlarged for the 1/2" hardware.
