No Passenger Side Trailer Lights When Using Tow Ready T-1 Connector # 118446 on 2008 Chrysler T&C

Question:

I purchased from E-Trailer about 3 years ago and when I tested it after installation the passenger side trailer light would not work and at the time I thought it was the trailer bulb. Never used after that until now and noticed the pass. side does light does not work. I tested at the 4 pole plug and there is no pwer for the pass. side. I checked the ground and still doesnt work. Do you advise me trying anything or should I order a new one?

Thank you for your purchase of the Tow Ready T-One Trailer Harness, part # 118446, back in July of 2009. This part number is no longer active but the current equivalent that you reviewed, part # 118552, would install and operate in the same manner. I have linked a video showing the entire process in your same year/make/model vehicle.

First I suggest you have a helper on hand to confirm that all lighting functions on the 2008 Town & Country operate properly. With the trailer disconnected, have your helper operate the vehicle running, brake and turn signal lights while you observe to verify they are functioning correctly on the tow vehicle.

If the vehicle lights are okay then re-connect the trailer and test. If you happen to have access to another trailer you can test using that other trailer to see if the harness operates properly. Also, if you can test your trailer with another tow vehicle you will be able to quickly determine if the issue is in the vehicle or trailer.

If the problem remains isolated to the passenger side trailer lights next check the T-One connector at the passenger side tail light assembly. In particular check for bent or corroded contacts on the connectors. Even very slight green or white corrosion can inhibit proper contact. Check and clean connections as necessary. We always recommend use of a dielectric grease product such as # 11755 to protect contacts from moisture and corrosion.

You note you have checked that you have a solid ground connection at the vehicle (preferably to a bare metal surface). Were the issue resulting from a bad ground then you would likely have the problem on both sides of the trailer. If you continue to observe correct operation of the trailer lights on the driver side but not on the passenger side, then it is possible the module is damaged.

If possible, check the trailer manufacturer literature for any information regarding the current drawn by the trailer lights. You will want to ensure the trailer lights do not exceed the maximum amperage ratings for the harness (4.2 amps per circuit for the stop/turn lights; 7.5 amps for the tail lights). The module could be damaged by use with a trailer that pulls more than this rated current.

I suggest you also inspect the trailer wiring for any pinched wires, wires with cracked or worn insulation or any signs of corrosion on the trailer 4-pole connector. Also check that the white ground wire on the trailer is secured to a clean, rust-free unpainted surface on the trailer frame. A fault condition in the trailer wiring could have damaged the module and if this is the case you want to find and correct that fault before installing a new module. I have linked two articles that provide helpful troubleshooting guidance.

If these testing steps do not reveal a problem in the tow vehicle or trailer then replacement of the module will be necessary.
