Installing a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2006 Dodge Dakota without Factory Tow Package

Question:

The Blue connector under my dash only has three wires coming out the back. Is this because my truck did not have the tow package? And does this mean I have to hard wire the trailer brake?

For a 2006 Dodge Dakota that does not have the factory tow package you will need to hardwire in a trailer brake controller. The first thing you will need is a 4-Way trailer wiring harness, # 118323. If the truck already has a 4-Way you will not need to add this harness.

Next, you will need a 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. This will provide the 7-Way and all of the wiring and accessories to wire in the brake controller. I have included some links that explain the ETBC7 installation for you.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This controller is reliable, easy to set up, and easy to use.

If the truck already has a 7-Way then you will not need ETBC7 though you can follow the steps that pertain to you in the links I provided. What you will need is installation kit # 5506 for a trailer with 6 to 8 brakes. What you would do is just tap into the brake output wire on the 7-Way using some of the wire in the installation kit. Route it under the vehicle as described for ETBC7. Route it into the cab and attach it to the brake controller blue wire.
