Rooftop Cargo Bag Recommendation for a 2011 Jeep Patriot Without Crossbars

Question:

Looking for a roof bag for my 2011 Jeep Patriot, on which I do not have crossbars. I do have a sunroof, however. Largest bag going in is a hard shell 32in rollin suitcase, but would like to fit additional bags as well. I am worried it wont fit right though.

We had a Jeep Patriot on our lot so I went out to take some measurements. For the Patriot, I recommend choosing a roof bag that is no wider than 36 inches because that is the space you have available between the side rails on your roof. If you choose a wider roof bag, the bag will hang over the side rails.

One roof bag that you may be interested in is the Rightline Ace Rooftop Cargo Bag, # RL100A20. This bag is 34 inches wide x 44 inches long x 17 inches tall. This cargo bag should be able to hold your 32 inch suitcase with enough room for other cargo.

You could use a larger cargo bag like the Rightline Sport 3 XL Cargo Bag, # RL100S30, that you referenced, but this bag will hang over your side rails a few inches.

Another thing to keep in mind is your sunroof. When using a roof top cargo bag, it is not recommended to open your sun roof if the cargo bag sits on the glass. On your vehicle, the bag will not sit on the glass, but depending on the weight that is sitting on your roof, I would not recommend opening the sun roof. The glass will slide back in the roof, right under the weight of the cargo bag.

Dirt and debris can be caught between the cargo bag and roof when driving, so it is a good idea to clean the roof and underside of the bag from time to time, especially on long trips. I recommend using the Non-Skid Roof Protection Pad, # RL100650. This will keep the cargo bag from moving or sliding when you are turning, braking or accelerating and decrease potential for scratching.
