Brake Controller/7-Way Trailer Connector Installation-2001 International Trucks 4000 Series Truck

Question:

I have a 2001 International 4300 that Im adding a hitch to tow an equipment trailer. Currently, there is no harness for a trailer. How do I add a traditional 7 pin connector and what brake controller would work best for my setup?

Your 2001 International 4300 box truck should have a combined taillight wiring system, which means that the turn signals and brake lamps are combined on the same wire, just like most trailers are wired.

For a 7-way trailer connector, I'd recommend using part # 20023 which would wire up as follows:

• Black---12V power from battery
• White--ground to frame
• Red---left turn and stop tapped into truck's taillight wiring harness
• Brown--Tail and running lights tapped into trucks taillight wiring harness
• Green-- right turn and stop-from taillight wiring harness
• Yellow---reverse lights (if needed) from reverse lamp circuit
• Blue---electric brakes- carries output from brake controller

You'll also need the # 5506 wiring kit. The kit includes 25 feet of duplex cable. You'll need enough length to run from the rear of the truck up to the battery, then from the battery through the firewall into the truck cab twice. So you'll need to measure that distance, subtract the 25 feet already included and determine how much additional wire you need. We sell the wire by the foot as part # 10-2-1. The # 5506 kit includes the necessary hardware circuit breakers you'll need for a successful installation.

For a brake controller, I'd recommend the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160. The controller is reasonably priced and very simple to use.

I've linked to some videos and help articles that explain how to complete the installation, as well as to a video that explains how the Tekonsha Primus brake controller works.
