Can An Older L44648 Bearing Be Replaced With An L44649 Bearing?

Question:

Hey. I have a 1979 trailer with the older 44648 outer bearings. I see that that model is no longer available for purchase. Will the newer L44649s work? Seems 44648 ID = 1.064 and 44649 ID = 1.063

Though the measurements are extremely close to each other, I cannot recommend using the # L44649 and a direct replacement for your L44648 bearing. The tolerances on spindles are exact and if the correct bearing isn't used, it can cause a lot of friction, heat, and a possible failure. What is going to be the best option is replacing your axle with something that uses more common bearings.

Doing this will require a few measurements, but as examples, the Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern # 35545E-ST-89 with brake drums, or # 35545I-EZ-89 with idler hubs will both measure 89" from hub face to hub face and 74" from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other. We do have quite a few other measurements if this doesn't match what you have as well.

I know this will be a lot more work than expected, but it really will be the best way to proceed.
