When a coupler gets stuck on the ball it can be because of several factors. First, if there is tension between the truck and trailer then it can cause the coupler to bind and get stuck on the ball. You can try moving slightly forward or backward to relieve the tension.

If that does not release the tension enough you can also use the trailer jack to lift both the truck and trailer a little to relieve the tension which will make it easier to unlatch from around the ball.

You may also benefit from lubricating the mechanism that clamps on the ball as well as greasing the ball itself using # 58117. If there is dirt or corrosion in the mechanism that can cause it to not work properly.

If the coupler is damage somehow and the ball cavity is smaller then that could be an issue as well although it is not likely. A damaged coupler should be replaced. Some coupler clamp mechanisms have a little bit of adjustment, normally by tightening or loosening a bolt you can adjust it just so so it clamps the ball and releases properly.
