Trailer Brakes Lock Up Using a 6-Way to 7-Way Adapter on a 2006 Toyota Sequoia
Question:
Hello, I have a 06 toyota sequia that has a 7 round rv plug wired on it, yesterday, I bought a new 16 ft trailer, that has brakes and a 6 round plug on it, I went to wal mart, bought an adapter for 13 bux and plugged it in and went home, by the time I got home the brake axel on the trailer was hot as heck...I called the trailer place and they said....ohhhh you have the wrong adapter, just take it apart and switch the black and blue wire. So, Im asking you, the expert, is this correct, or should I look for an adapter that already is done this way or what? So, if I do switch the black and blue wire, Im will just not be applying the brakes on my trailer when I touch my brakes unless I install a brake controller correct? I guess my real concern is....if I do switch the black and blue wire, I will still need a brake box to stop my trailer, but it should work correctly with them switched if I do put a correctly installed brake box in my truck? Thanks

There are 2 ways to wire a 6-Way connector. Either the brake output will be in the middle or the 12 volt power will be in the middle. Adapters are normally one way or the other. It is permissible to swap the blue and clack wires like they told you.
We have an adapter thank makes switching easy, # HM47570. All you do is pull out the little compartment, rotate it 180 degrees, and plug it back in.
What you will want to do after rewiring the adapter is take the trailer back to the place you bought it or a shop that works on trailers and have the hubs, bearings, spindles, and drums looked at to make sure the excessive heat from the brakes being on the whole time did not do permanent damage.
The brakes on the trailer will not engage unless you have a trailer brake controller installed in the vehicle, you are correct. Just switching the wires will prevent the brakes from being on all the time on the trailer but you would need a controller to activate them.
You will need a brake controller and brake controller wiring harness for your 2006 Toyota Sequoia. For a brake controller i recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is easy to use, easy to set up, and is reliable. For a wiring harness, on a 2006 Sequoia with a factory 7-Way connector, use # 3040-P. I have linked instructions and a video to help you.
