Should the Steering Column be Locked on 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI Towed With Roadmaster Tow Dolly

Question:

My 2019 VW Golf GTI has a manual transmission, fwd, but Im not sure if the steering column locks. Does this matter with the pivoting deck? I thought the pivoting deck could accomidate both locking and unlockable steering columns? Thanks Love this trailer, especially with e brakes

According to the manual for the # RM-2050-1 the towed vehicle's steering wheel must be locked or otherwise secured when towing. Failure to lock the steering wheel will allow the towed vehicle to pivot on the bed, causing it to hit the fender and wheel assembly of the dolly. Severe damage will result to both vehicles.

In order to lock the steering wheel if yours doesn't lock, you can use the seat belt lock feature on your vehicle. Loop the seat belt around the steering wheel several times and buckle it into place. After doing that, pull the seat belt all the way out until it stops and let it retract. This should engage the seat belt lock. After this is done pull from the steering wheel side to get it as tight as possible to hold the wheel straight.

That being said, it is worth noting that while looking in the owner's manual for the 2019 VW Golf GTI I found the following information under towing.

Never let the vehicle be towed at speeds above 30 mph.

Never let the vehicle be towed for more than 30 miles.

I did not find any information on recreational towing so I would have to recommend using a trailer to tow your vehicle. If you can find something saying otherwise you should be able to use the tow dolly.
