Can the OEM Green Wire On a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee Handle the Power Draw From Trailer Brakes

Question:

I have a 2010 jeep grand cherokee. The light green factory wire that goes to the blue wire on the brake controler is not veary heavy compared to the blue brake controler wire. The brake controler calls for a thirty amp breaker. So that is what i installed. Do you think the green wire will handel the amp draw for the brakes? Thanks

Helpful Expert Reply:

The green wire on your Jeep is output to the trailer brakes and brake magnets do not draw near 30 amps. The 30 amp circuit breaker is installed in line with the black power wire for the brake controller.

Normally 10 and 12 inch brakes will draw 7.5 to 8.2 amps (total for 2 brake assemblies). And 6 brake assemblies will draw a total of 22.6 to 24.5 amps.

So the wire on your Jeep may be smaller than the wire on the brake controller but it is going to work fine. But if it is concerning you can always run a length of # 10-1-1 wire from the blue brake controller wire back to the 7-Way.
