Curt Hitch Replacing Heat Shield on a 2018 BMW 230i
Question:
I am supposed to have this brand and model hitch put on my car tomorrow. Now I am worried after I am reading your install information. On this model hitch says the heat shield will need to be permanently removed. Is there ANY way to keep the heat shield on? what is the Heat shield function on this car?? will taking it off void warranties of my car??

The heat shield function is to protect your rear trim pieces from the heat of the muffler and exhaust pipes. The heat shield must be removed so the Curt hitch receiver item # C11367 can be installed. Once the hitch receiver is installed it acts as a heat shield and protects your trim pieces from the heat of the muffler and exhaust pipes. The Curt hitch receiver is constructed of steel and then powder coated. The Curt hitch receiver will act just fine as a replacement heat shield.
For control of your trailer lights I recommend the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected wiring harness item # 119250KIT. This is a 4-Pole Flat trailer connector that bypasses your factory wiring and involves no cutting, splicing, or plugging into vehicle's wiring. The sensors clamp onto the wires of your factory tail light wiring harness to detect current and allows you to control your trailers brake, running, and turn signal lights.
For light duty towing you will also need a ball mount item # C45521 and a hitch ball item item # A-82 is for a 2 inch ball.
Installing a trailer hitch will not void a vehicle’s warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, passed by Congress in 1975, ensures that consumers can install aftermarket parts without the fear of voiding their warranty. One stipulation is that the installation must be done properly. An improper installation will not be covered (e.g. bolt holes drilled too close together, different hardware used, etc).
