Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with Factory 4-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

The pollark replacement. I have 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 with tow package & standard 4 pin harness and want to add trailer brakes for a bumper pull camper. What are your suggestions? I would like to get a brke module & quick adapt harness. With these products and the trailer connector listed above would I have to run aditional wiring?

The items you selected are meant to be replacements for the factory 7-way connector and will not work on your 2005 Dodge Ram with factory 4-way connector. To install a brake controller you will need to use a 4-way to 7-way adapter and then run the proper wires to install the brake controller and 12 volt power to the trailer connector.

We have a kit, item # ETBC7, that includes all the necessary parts and wire to install the brake controller and 7-way connector on your vehicle along with this you will need a brake controller and if your truck has the connector under the dash for a brake controller you will need the proper harness to connect to that.

The Electric Brake Controller Installation on Dodge Ram Truck page (see link) will guide you through installation and where to splice the brake wire from the trailer connector under the hood if your truck has the connector under the dash or where to run all of the wires if you do not have the connector.

For your truck I would recommend either the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller , item # 90885 with Dodge Wiring Adapter # 3020-P or the Draw-Tite Activator I Time Delayed Brake Controller with Dodge Adapter, item # 5504 with # 3020-P. Both of these adapters are specifically designed to work with your truck, and will connect under the dash.

The Prodigy controller is a proportional controller and will supply braking with the same intensity as the vehicle once set up and the Activator controller is time delayed and applies the trailer brakes at a preset amount with each stop once you have it set up.
