Since it's an intermittent sort of problem, I'm suspecting a loose connection somewhere. If the red dot on the LED display is lighting up, it indicates that the vehicle has lost the electrical connection to the trailer brakes. The most common cause for this is a dirty or damaged 7-way on the vehicle or the trailer. Closely examine the sockets and pins of the 7-way trailer connector, on both the trailer and the vehicle side of the equation. Look for bent pins or green/white corrosion on the pins. If you see corrosion on the pins, there's a good chance that the corrosion has spread to the interior of the connector where the wires attach to the terminals and are interfering with the signal from reaching the trailer brakes.

You'll also want to examine the brake output circuit on the trailer (typically a blue wire). Make sure all connections are sound. Each brake magnet has two wires exiting it. One should be securely grounded to clean metal on the trailer frame, the other should be securely connected to the brake output circuit.

I've linked to an article that provides more information on troubleshooting brake controllers.
