Cable Attachment and Function of the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch - 1500 lbs # DL11011

Question:

Several questions regarding use of the DL11011 worm drive winch. I need to know how best to attach cable to the DL11011 worm drive winch. Is there a part recommended for this? Will 3/16inch .188 cable work okay. It specifies 1/4inch cable Is there a minimum load requirement? Is the side that the cable is wound on the drum important underside near baseplate or topside? I assume that the cable comes out to hook on the side opposite the cross-bar near the crank arm. Is this important? Thanks for the help and a quick response is really appreciated.

To secure a cable on the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Winch - 1,500 lbs, # DL11011, you will use a series of loops around the reel and gear. You will not need to use a cable fastener or cable keeper to do this. I have attached a diagram that shows how the cable should be fed through the reel and gear for you to check out.

I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and she assured me that a 3/16 inch diameter cable will work with this winch. I recommend using the Hand Winch Cable - 3/16 Inch Diameter, # DL24043. This galvanized steel cable will allow the winch to keeps its 1,500 lb capacity.

You can have the cable fed from the top or the bottom of the reel, it does not matter. The only thing that changes when moving the cable feed from the top of the reel to the bottom is the direction that you rotate the crank handle to reel in or pay out the cable.
