Since you have a 4-way trailer connector on your 2013 Ford Explorer you are going to need a Universal Installation Kit forTrailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 to convert the 4-way to a 7-way in order for you to install and use a brake controller.
If you are towing a trailer without brakes but has a 7-way connection you could just get a Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole # 37185 to plug the 4-way into the 7-way and all of the trailer light functions would work.
I attached installation instructions and videos for you to check out also for both products.
