How To Install Tekonsha Prodigy P2 In 2014 Ford Explorer W/ Curt 7-way Connector C56306 Installed

Question:

I have a 2014 explorer that is not tow ready. A couple years back I installed the C56306 so I have a 7 way plug that I put in just with a t connector. I am going to start towing a travel trailer and need to install a brake controller. I was looking at part number 90885. Would I just need to do the wire connections under the dash or do I need a new 7 way connector and run wires from the bumper to the battery? Thank you.

We have just what you need!

The Curt 7-way Connector # C56306 you installed in your 2014 Ford Explorer is not set up for a trailer brake controller, but using Wiring Kit # 5506 you can change that.

You will need to install the black wire of # 5506 to the 12v power wire on the 7-way connector and then run it to the positive terminal of your vehicles battery using the included 40 amp circuit breaker, and then extend the blue brake output wire from the 7-way connector to underneath the dash where you are wanting to mount the controller.

The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 is a fantastic choice as it is a very reliable controller, and is a proportional controller meaning that it uses a built in inertia sensor to detect the intensity you apply the brakes in your Explorer, and sends the same braking intensity to your trailers brakes for smooth, controlled braking.

To install the # 90885 you will need to make the following connections:

Black wire to positive terminal of battery using left over wire from # 5506 and included 20 amp circuit breaker if your trialer has 1-2 braking axles, or 30 amp circuit breaker if your trailer has 3-4 braking axles
White wire to ground
Blue wire to blue wire you extended from 7-way connector
Red wire to cold side of stop light switch that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. Using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 will allow you to find the correct wire.
