Vehicle Wiring Harness For Installing A 7-Way and Brake Controller On a 2017 Dodge Journey.

Question:

I have a 2017 Dodge Journey and I see some wiring harnesses have a converter and some don’t. Do I need ones with a converter? Also I will be installing a 7 way adapter as well.

For your 2017 Dodge Journey I would recommend using a wiring harness with a converter. The converter protects the factory wiring from becoming overheated due to excess voltage running through the wiring. It does this by acting as a relay, it sees the power going to the taillight and sends power from the vehicle battery to the trailer lights. While there are some kits that will work without a converter on your Journey you will need to make sure it is the right kit for your Journey.

I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118536 if your Journey has LED taillights.

For incandescent bulb taillights you will want the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118567.

Both of these kits use the powered converter and have plug n play connectors for the taillight wiring. Since you will already be running wiring for a 7-way there is no extra hassle of running the power wire for the converter.

The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 will provide you with the wiring and circuit breakers necessary to install a 7-way and Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This will allow you to tow trailers with brakes. The Prodigy P3 is a proportional brake controller that has an internal inertia sensor to adjust the brake output for light and heavy braking automatically.
