Determining Which Ball Mount For Towing New Trailer W/ 2" Coupler

Question:

I’m getting a trailer and was told I need a 2 inch hitch ball but my truck has a 2 5/16 ball will it work?

Since the trailer you purchased has a coupler that requires a 2" hitch ball, you will need to either replace the 2-5/16" hitch ball on your current ball mount or purchase a separate ball mount with a 2" hitch ball when you need to tow that specific trailer.

If you are wanting to replace the hitch ball on your current ball mount you will need to measure the diameter of the hitch ball hole. Since it currently has a 2-5/16" hitch ball it more than likely has a 1-1/4" hole. For a 2" hitch ball you would need # A-90.

To determine the correct ball mount you will need to measure from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver on your truck, and with the trailer level you will measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler of the trailer. The difference in these measurements will tell you the rise/drop you need.

If the receiver of your truck is higher than the coupler on your trailer you will need a ball mount with a drop the amount of the difference in the measurements, and if the receiver on your truck is lower than the coupler of the trailer you will a need a ball mount with rise of the difference in the measurements.

For example the Draw-Tite Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 2-3/4" Rise, 4" Drop - 9" Long - 7.5K # 2753 has either a 2-3/4" rise or a 4" drop. If this matches what you need then this would be a great option for you. This ball mount uses a hitch ball with a 1" diameter shank so you will need 2" hitch ball # 63845.

If you find you need a ball mount with a different rise or drop just let me know.

I included a video of the # 2753 and a link to all of our ball mounts for you to take a look at.
