Will Changing Tires On Trailer Increase The Speed Rating?

Question:

The numbers on the tires are: 4.80/4.00-12

Expert Reply:

Typically the only part of a trailer that has a speed rating is the tires, so if the reason your trailer is limited to 45 MPH is due to the speed rating of the tires, then yes you will be able to increase the speed rating of the trailer by replacing the tires.

To determine which tires are going to be correct you will need to know the size of your current tires. You can find this stamped on the sidewall of the tires as shown in the included help article.

If you can let me know what size tires you have on your trailer I would be happy to recommend new tires with a higher speed rating.

I also went ahead and included a link to our selection of trailer tires for you to take a look at.

Since your trailer has 4.80-4.00-12 tires I recommend the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TT48012C as it will be an exact replacement. This tire has an 81 MPH speed rating so you will be able to go highway speeds without having to worry, and the 990lb load rating per tire is plenty for hauling your trailer with 400lbs of gear on it. It also has a 2-year limited warranty should anything go wrong. I included a video of the # TT48012C for you to take a look at.
