Parts Needed to Tow Trailer With Brakes on 2017 BMW X5 and Add Weight Distribution Hitch

Question:

Hello, I have purchased a 2021 Coleman 17B trailer and am waiting delivery on it. I managed to install a CURT 13077 Class 3 Trailer with 2 inch receiver on it. The RV rep told me to install a 7 pin wire kit. He also recommended a a E2 weight distribution kit as well. Can you please recommend the right parts please? Thank you in advance Sirs or Maams

To start, if you don't already have a 4 way wiring harness on your X5 you'll need that first, I recommend using the Curt # C56190KIT since it's a plug and play solution, and Curt wiring is one of the most reliable solutions.

Then, I recommend using the # ETBC7L to install a 7 way connector on your 2017 BMW X5, which will give you a 7 way connector that can be used with wireless brake controllers. I recommend using this instead of the # ETBC7 because your 2017 BMW X5 isn't going to have an available plug and play adapter for a brake controller in the cab of the vehicle, so you wouldn't be able to install a wired brake controller without splicing into the wiring.

If you already have a brake controller then you'll want to use the # ETBC7 and you will need to run wires into the cab of the vehicle through the firewall to allow for a connection point between the controller and 7 way.

Typically when it comes to European vehicles, the electrical systems can be a big finicky, so it's not something that we recommend doing if it can be avoided. The brake controller I recommend using with the # ETBC7L is the Curt Echo # C51180 which will provide you with proportional braking for your trailer and gives you a controller that will be controlled by your smart phone (Android 4.4 or newer/iOS 8.0 or newer required).

When it comes to the weight distribution hitch, the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA92-00-0600 is a great choice for your 2021 Coachmen-Coleman Lantern 17B since it's got a GVWR of about 3800-lbs and will have a loaded tongue weight of around 400-lbs. The E2 will also give you 2 point sway control to help create a safer towing experience with less sway. The E2 requires a hitch ball with a 1-1/4" shank diameter like the # EQ91-00-6100 (2-5/16" hitch ball) or # A-90 (2" hitch ball).

I've linked some review and installation videos of these parts for you to have a look at, as well.
