Will Increasing Tire Load Capacity Increase Load Carrying Capacity of My Trailer?

Question:

I have a 2019 5th wheel Travel Trailer. The dry weight is approx. 13,000lbs, on 2-7,000lbs rated axles. They came with factory Rainier St 235/80R16 L12 tires. I want to go to a 14 ply tire in a 235/85R16. This would increase the load carrying capacity and the price difference is minimal. I have the clearance or would you stay with the 235/80R16?

Expert Reply:

The Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # TTWPRG235R16 will not increase your load rating. The tire does have a load rating of 4,400 but your axle is still only rated for 7,000lbs. So you will be getting a stiffer tire that will just make the ride quality rougher as the heavier ply tires will be more subject to bounce than deflect when compressed.

I recommend sticking with the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL401. These have a load rating of 3,520lbs which is just right for your 7,000lb axles.
