Installing Trailer Wiring Harness on 1965 Chevy C10 Pickup

Question:

I just recently purchased a 1965 C10 pickup w/ a tow hitch installed, but the vehicle has not been wired yet. What do you recommend I get to wire the vehicle for the first time? Im towing a 2007 4,500 pound ski boat that has a 4 plug adapter. Does the vehicle need a 7 prong adapter so I can utilize electric braking? Please advise.

For a 1965 C10, you would use a # 18252 that would hardwire into the existing taillight circuits that are easily accessible under the vehicle at the rear. The included tester makes locating the correct circuits to tap into very easy. Have a helper activate the left turn signal, and probe the wires feeding the drivers side tail light assembly until you find the wire that lights the tester. Once the proper wire is found, tap the yellow wire of the connector into it. Do the same with the brown wire for the running lights and the green wire for the right turn. The white wire is grounded to the truck frame.

The 4-pole connector will cover the lighting connections, which is all you would need for the simple 4-pole on your boat trailer. If you want to upgrade to a 7-way so you can tow a trailer with electric brakes, this can easily be done by installing a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. You would also need a brake controller installation kit like part # ETBC7. The kit contains everything needed to install your controller, including the adapter to convert your existing 4-pole into a 7-way. The install is simple, I will provide you with a link to the instructions as well as a link to an install video that will walk you through the process. The video shows the kit being used on a much newer vehicle, but the procedure would be the same with your truck.
