Best Trunk Mounted vs Hitch Mounted Bike Rack for 2016 Mazda CX-5
Question:
Hi, Ive done a bit of research but still am not sure the best rack to go with. I would appreciate your advice. I have a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5. The hatch is not automatic. I would like a rack for 2 bikes minimum for 2 bikes for teenager girls, but a 3-4 bike rack would be awesome if I ever get myself a bike not sure Ive ever seen a 3 bike rack though thats all I need. Would love to be able to open the hatch with the bikes attached. The rack and bikes would be kept in a carport so need to be able to be locked for theft deterrent no garage Will be driving long distances on the freeway Debating between hitch mounted would need to get a hitch installed or hatch mounted but obviously dont want to damage my car. Ive watched tons of videos but am still undecided. I used to drive a minivan so never needed a bike rack. Thanks so much for your time. Ive really been impressed with your site and the helpful videos.

If you need just a trunk mounted bike rack, then the Yakima FullBack 3 # Y02633 is a fit for your vehicle and can carry 3 bikes. This mounts to your hatch and is a premium trunk mounted bike rack with locks, nice anti-sway cradles, and will do relatively less damage to your hatch.
When possible though, I always recommend getting a hitch and a hitch mounted rack. They are easier to mount/dismount, further away from your vehicle, and are much more stable. Both your car and your bikes will be in better shape with a hitch mounted bike rack especially if you're going fast and on long road trips. Just being able to use your rear windshield wiper and open your rear hatch would be major pluses.
For maximum versatility, a Class III hitch with a 2" opening like the Draw-Tite hitch # 76138 is a good way to go. This fits your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 and I linked the install video below.
For a bike rack, if you want to open the hatch with your bikes installed, then a platform bike rack that tilts-away is what you're looking for. The Kuat Transfer V2 # KU24FR for 3 bikes is a great option and you can add onto it with part # KU57FR to carry 4 bikes. This has a lock and a very easy and intuitive mounting/dismounting/tilt-away design.
